    • Abstract

    This study examines the strategies of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE, in Spanish) between 2015 and 2016 in response to the emergence of Podemos as a key competitor on the Spanish left. Using a qualitative approach that combines theories of party behavior, electoral analysis, and interviews, I explore factors such as vote evolution, volatility, and electoral transfers. The findings reveal that perceiving Podemos as a threat prompted the PSOE to adjust its tactics to retain voters and maximize support, which created internal tensions among factions over whether to prioritize a centrist approach or compete ideologically with Podemos. These dynamics reshaped both the party’s strategies and its internal cohesion, impacting its political positioning. This study contributes to the literature on strategic party adaptation in highly competitive electoral contexts, highlighting the role of organizational and contextual factors in the response of traditional parties to new political actors in modern democracies.

    Eduardo Bayón, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia

    Investigador en formación del Programa de Ciencia Política en la Escuela Internacional de Doctorado de la Unidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). Licenciado en Derecho por la Universidad de Oviedo, Graduado en Ciencias Políticas y Administración, y magíster en Derechos Fundamentales por la UNED.
