Abstract

This article reflects on the behaviour of political parties in Latin America and its impact on

democratic governance in the region. It is based on the premise that some features of its performance impact on the levels of democratic governance, i.e. on the ability of the actors and political institutions to process social demands, provide appropriate responses and lead processes of change that tend to consolidate and deepen democracy. The article aims to identify the problems faced by political parties in relation to their organization, the way they compete in the party system and the way they perform their governmental tasks.
