Elecciones Generales Ecuador 2021: reformas, fragmentación política y pendiente pandemia COVID-19

Abstract

On February 7, 2021, elections took place to elect the authorities of the Presidency, Vice- Presidency, National Assembly and the Andean Parliament. These elections were carried out in the midst of an atypical situation not only due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also due to different legal and institutional factors that had an impact in the pre-electoral, electoral, and post electoral stages. According to the official results of the National Electoral Council (CNE), the second round took place on April 11 between the candidates Andrés Arauz (representative of Correísmo) and Guillermo Lasso (of the Right). This election was characterized by a high number of parties, the fact that it evaluated the implementation of a series of electoral reforms carried out in February of 2020 and the narrow results between the presidential competitors for the second place, which meant uncertainty, serious conflicts and social mobilizations during the days following the election.
