  • Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the situation of electoral participation in Latin America and to assess its impact on the democratic development of the region. To this end, we propose to identify the pre-dominant trends, as well as to determine if we are dealing with generalized behaviors or if, on the contrary, we are dealing with political phenomena that find different expressions according to the factors involved. The study covers the eighteen countries of the region during the period from the beginning of the Third Wave, 1978, to 2002.
