    • Abstract

    In the last five years, part of the academic community has warned about the existence of a process of global democratic regression. The main institutions dedicated to measuring and quantifying the quality of political regimes have also highlighted the deterioration of democratic institutions and norms, reflected in the worsening of democratic indicators at a global level. However, other sectors of academia suggest that this process is not so serious, if it even exists. In this sense, exploring these apparently contradictory perspectives opens an important space for contributing to Peruvian, regional and global knowledge. For this reason, the first issue of this year's Revista Elecciones is dedicated to exploring democracies, their components and variations, and to investigating the factors that contribute to their strengthening or weakening.

    Paolo Sosa-Villagarcia, The University of British Columbia

    Paolo Sosa Villagarcia is a researcher at the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos. He is a PhD candidate at the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia and holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with a major in Political Science and Government, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He is currently a Human-Centric Cyber-Security Fellow with the Electoral Integrity Project. He has been a Fox International Fellow at Yale University, a Public Scholars Initiative Fellow at UBC, and a country coordinator at the Varieties of Democracy Project (V-Dem).
