  • Abstract

This article analyzes the General Elections 2016 with the aim of inferring the way in which democratic ideals are expressed in the Peruvian case. Thus, from a theoretical approach that assumes the electoral process as the maximum realization of democracy, it is analyzed whether the dynamics and results of the 2016 election clearly reflect the democratic ideals of pluralism, equality, and sovereignty. The results of this inquiry reveal that these principles are expressed in a distorted manner in the Peruvian case and that the origin of such a situation would be in the institutional design, as well as in some features of the Peruvian social structure.
