Juventud y política en la universidad de San Marcos a fines del siglo XIX

Abstract

Students from San Marcos University actively took part in politics at the end of the 19th century as a prelude and learning exercise for their participation in national politics following the family political tradition. Nonetheless, national and university authorities made tireless efforts to stop such participation. Politics became a common space in which students and teachers walked through. Students like Antonio Miró-Quesada and Luis Varela y Orbegoso, organized political clubs to support candidacies of legislators or presidents of the Republic. They were times of political struggle nationwide and San Marcos students were there to obtain a representative space for political power in the country. Politics then and now play a part in university life.
