Dinámicas de participación electoral indígena y el empleo del sistema de cuotas en Amazonas: los casos de Bagua y Condorcanqui

Abstract

The article analyzes the electoral participation of the indigenous population in the provinces of Condorcanqui and Bagua, department of Amazonas. This research sustains that electoral participation of the indigenous population in the Amazonas region presents differences for attaining representation due to political fragmentation, cohesion of indigenous organizations and the presence of indigenous people in capital cities of the provinces. Indigenous leaders who have participated as political actors in various electoral processes were interviewed. In addition, information from the National Electoral Processes Office and the National Electoral Board was analyzed. One of the principal conclusions of this research was that the system of electoral quotas, even though it promotes the participation of members of the indigenous people in subnational elections, does not guarantee their representation as authorities.
