Elecciones Generales Perú 2021: claves para diseccionar las elecciones del Bicentenario

Abstract

The Peruvian general elections of 2021 positioned themselves as a challenge from many perspectives: on the one hand, they represented a desire to achieve a democratic and institutional end to the political crisis that came about due to the resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in 2017, and was followed by several conflicts that lead to the impeachment of former President Martin Vizcarra; and on the other, the COVID-19 public health emergency and the brand-new political reforms implemented during those elections presented new rules and protocols that turned said election into a test tube for Peruvian democracy. However, the political fragmentation reaching a new peak, the high rate of absenteeism, the low trust in the political parties and the ravages of the pandemic in the population set the tone within the elections framed in the 200 years of Peru's Independence. The following article makes a brief review of the main elements and characteristics present during these elections; in particular, their development, the candidates and the results of the vote count, as a way to provide the necessary keys to understand its outcome and its contextualization in recent Peruvian history.
