Violencia electoral en México: asesinatos en los procesos electorales locales y federal 2017-2018

Abstract

The general elections of Mexico in 2018 were the largest electoral process in the country’s history; however, they were marred by the violence that claimed the lives of at least 145 people who were somehow related to the electoral processes or were political actors of their localities. Although at first it could be thought that these attacks fall within the context of generalized violence that Mexico is experiencing - caused by transnational organized crime organizations -, when reviewing the characteristics of these attacks, it can be seen that it is a phenomenon with its own characteristics, it’s about electoral violence. This document gives a general description of the implications of electoral violence, and for the particular case of Mexico, variables such as the temporality of the murders, their geographical dispersion and the characteristics of the victims are reviewed of these attacks.
