Primarias en América Latina: hacia una tipología tridimensional

Abstract

There is a recognition that the primaries are candidate selection mechanisms with relevant national variations in Latin America; however, conventional approaches do not yet incorporate this fact. For this reason, we offer a descriptive typology of primaries, emphasizing three dimensions: the degree of their obligation (high or low), the degree of state control (for example, state participation in the process) and the type of inclusiveness of the electorate (open and/or closed electorate). This framework would allow academics to develop more exact and precise explanations about the design, implementation and evaluation of the instrument, improving the selection of cases within the studies compared in this regard. We illustrate the usefulness of this framework by analyzing the Peruvian case.
