La interdependencia entre la democracia digital y la crisis de la democracia representativa en América Latina

Abstract

During the last decade we have seen the weakening of democracy in Latin America. The democratic transitions in the region, and the initiatives promoted by both governments and civil society, led to the implementation of different mechanisms that brought these two actors closer together, allowing citizens to actively participate in public life throughout Latin America. The protests that occurred in 2019 and this year showed that these mechanisms were not enough and that the relationship between both actors had to be rethought. This article presents as a new variable to consider the new technological and digital tools, developing and defending the idea of complementarity not only between representative and represented, but also between the mentioned tools and the process of democratic deconsolidation that the region is experiencing. Thus, depending on the actions that are taken, they could serve as a promoter or threat of democracy.
