La paradoja irresuelta. Apuntes para el estudio de los derechos y la ciudadanía de los pueblos indígenas en México

Abstract

The acknowledgement of collective rights, which has taken place during last decades Latin America, has been interpreted as strengthening of citizenship of the indigenous people by various social, political and academic spheres. Retaking this premise, the present article theoretically and empirically analyzes the rights and the situation of the indigenous people in Mexico with the objective of exploring the following question: do the collective rights represent a sufficient condition to ensure the citizenship of the indigenous people? The article suggests that the citizenship of the indigenous people in Mexico – the status formed of rights, participation and identity – requires the overcoming of institutional, as well as conceptual, obstacles in order to be effective.
