  • Abstract

This paper describes the transformations experienced by the relationship between political parties and social movements in the twentieth century, particularly from the constitution of mass democracy. This analysis is based on the following areas: identity affinities, the mechanisms of political participation, the existing ‘institutional arrangements’ and financing sources. The main hypothesis suggests that the profound transformation in the relationship between parties and movements can be explained by changes in the way the society has shaped its political identities, in the state’s role in political order and in the emergence of new forms of collective action that were expressed in novel party arrangements and social movements.
